Decorating Tip: Furniture Shopping

Shopping for new furniture? Stores often slash prices on furniture right after the Holidays so head out for a good deal and keep these tips in mind.

Consider purchasing a sofa and two matching occasional chairs instead of a sofa and love seat. These pieces provide maximum versatility and create a cozy conversation area. Be sure that the back heights of all your seating are within 2-3" of each other and keep the scale (overall size) similar, this way your room will feel in balance and well put together.

Don't forget, the comfort and durability of your upholstered furniture is determined by four key components: frames, springs, padding and fabric.

High quality upholstered furniture has a hardwood frame (steel works too) and hand-tied springs. The frame is well padded and cushions usually consist of a foam core wrapped in down and feathers. This provides long term support with a soft seat. Look for durable fabrics if your upholstered furniture gets everyday use; denim, chenille and cotton twill and leather are good choices.

Really try out the furniture; sit, lay down, put your feet up, bounce a little bit. It should feel sturdy and not worn down anywhere no matter how long the salesperson says it’s been on the floor; and don’t be afraid to ask about cushion upgrades, they can add years to the life of a sofa or chair. Happy shopping!
